We can all take action by changing the way we shop, cook and plan our meals to avoid wasting food, money and resources.
- Freeze food ahead of date - frozen fruit can be a great addition to smoothies!
- Share your surplus food with others. Our nature as social beings can play a role in the solution.
- What can no longer be reused is good for composting, a natural process where microorganisms biodegrade food waste, turning it into a dark, earthy, nutrient-rich material that promotes healthy soil.
Valuable fact:
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that 6% of global food losses occur in Latin America and the Caribbean, and each year the region loses or wastes about 15% of its available food.
The food lost in the region could feed more than 30 million people (64% of those suffering from hunger in the region).
